Slow Cooker Shrimp and Grits
Craving something warm, creamy, and seriously comforting? This slow cooker shrimp and grits recipe is exactly what you need! Inspired by the beloved Southern dish, this dish is made a whole lot easier by letting the slow cooker handle most of the work. Instead of having to stand over the stove stirring, you let the grits cook slowly until they’re perfectly smooth and tender. The shrimp are then added at the end to keep them juicy and flavorful rather than rubbery.
Mixing creamy grits, melted cheddar cheese, and perfectly cooked shrimp, this dish satisfies with a balance of cozy flavors and indulgence. It’s simple enough for a weeknight dinner but still feels special enough for a weekend brunch or hosting guests.
Why This Recipe Works
One of the best things about this recipe is that it simplifies a typically more hands-on dish. Using a slow cooker takes away the stress of the attention that traditional grits typically need. While the grits cook and absorb the liquid, they result in a smooth, creamy texture without constantly having to stir or the risk of burning.
The timing of the shrimp is another reason this recipe works so well. Shrimp cook fast, like really fast, and adding them in too early is an easy way to ruin them. Here, they’re added right at the end, so they cook gently and remain tender and juicy.
And then comes the flavor. The cheddar cheese adds a sharp, savory richness, while the ghee incorporates a subtle buttery depth. All of the flavors blend in a way that feels rich and satisfying without becoming overly heavy.
Choosing High-Quality Shrimp
Shrimp play a big role in determining the final result of this dish, both in flavor and texture. When purchasing shrimp, look for ones that are firm, slightly translucent, and have a clean scent rather than a “fishy” smell. Frozen shrimp are a great option, especially when they’ve been frozen shortly after being caught to preserve freshness.
At Sizzlefish, Wild Gulf Shrimp are peeled, deveined, and individually packaged, making them convenient for recipes like these. These shrimp tend to maintain their natural sweetness and tender texture because they’re flash-frozen at peak freshness. This helps the dish come together with minimal prep.
That being said, any good-quality shrimp will work well here. Be sure to fully defrost and pat them dry before adding them to the slow cooker for the best results.
