Keto Diet: A Co-Worker Shares Results

One of our Sizzlefish teammates, Joe, decided to try the Ketogenic diet beginning last September. Joe is a career seafood manager involved in sales and procurement, and in that capacity he spends a lot of time traveling. In his late fifties, he is an avid golfer and a good cook who is particularly skilled with a grill. We asked him to share his story, and here is what he had to say.

When did you first start your keto diet and why?
The beginning of September 2016. I had not seen my brother in 7 months, and he was down 70 lbs. I knew I wanted to get rid of my beer belly, so I began to ask questions and found out more about this "diet” he was on, called the ketogenic diet.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how important is food to your life? You have a background in the food industry, right?
It's a 10! Some people Eat to Live... I Live to Eat. Yes, it's funny - I have been in the food industry my whole life. I started as a dishwasher at an Italian restaurant, moved to be a meat cutter, and then became a fishmonger for Whole Foods Market and ended up here.

How much weight have you lost since beginning?
I have lost 24 pounds so far. My goal is to lose 30.

Describe your mood/feelings when you follow Keto strictly
I'm always in a good mood. I remember though, the first couple of days you may experience "Keto Flu" (fatigue, etc. as you adjust to ketosis) but stick to it! Stay hydrated. Soon you will feel great.

What are your go-to resources for simple, delicious protein intake?
I aim to eat seafood 4 times a week. I love Sizzlefish because it is the best quality fish, and also because it is pre-portioned and convenient. I especially love the Sablefish and Atlantic Salmon. I love the high Omega 3s. If I am traveling, I will grab a salad and precooked protein.

What is the biggest challenge with staying on the diet?
Maintaining it four weeks straight without cheating. And not drinking beer.

Have you stayed on the keto diet since September?
Yes, except for a couple of lapses, during the holidays and while traveling overseas. If I had worked at avoiding any lapses at all, I probably would have lost the entire 30 pounds by now. But the good news is, I was able to enjoy a little “straying,” then resume keto easily and continue on the path toward my goal. It hasn’t been a difficult transition, and I am enjoying the results.

What was the first thing you noticed physically when starting this diet?
Belly fat disappearing. And my joints. They feel great.

What is a piece of advice you have for anyone thinking about doing this Keto thing?
Just do it. Stick to it and you will see results.

How do you deal with social situations when everyone is eating carbs and drinking?
I always look for the olive, meat, or cheese tray. I get a glass of ice water and if anyone asks what I'm drinking I tell them vodka!

What is your go-to Sizzlefish dish?
I love to keep it simple: Grilled sablefish with salt and pepper is absolutely fabulous.
