What Is Honey Walnut Shrimp?
Honey walnut shrimp is a popular Chinese American dish that features crispy shrimp coated in a sweet and creamy sauce, garnished with honey-glazed walnuts. It's a delightful combination of flavors and textures.
The dish typically begins with large shrimp that have been peeled and deveined. The shrimp are then coated in a light batter, often made with cornstarch, before being deep-fried until crispy and golden brown.
Meanwhile, walnuts are caramelized in a mixture of honey and sugar, creating a sweet and sticky glaze. These honey-glazed walnuts add a delightful crunch and additional sweetness to the dish.
Honey walnut shrimp is commonly served as an appetizer or as part of a main course accompanied by steamed rice or noodles. In this recipe, we served the decadent honey walnut shrimp over white rice for a complete meal that will satisfy hungry appetites.
All About The Sauce!
The sauce used in honey walnut shrimp is a creamy blend of honey, mayonnaise, and sometimes condensed milk or sweetened condensed milk. This sauce is usually sweet and rich, complementing the crispy shrimp and glazed walnuts.
The final dish is typically served hot, with the shrimp and walnuts tossed in the creamy honey sauce. It is often garnished sliced green onions for added flavor and visual appeal.
Learn About Our Colossal Shrimp!
Colossal shrimp, also known as jumbo shrimp, refers to a larger size category of shrimp commonly found in seafood markets and restaurants. These shrimp are typically larger than regular-sized shrimp and are sought after for their size and meatiness.
Here at Sizzlefish, our colossal shrimp are wild caught off the gulf of California. The shrimp is already peeled and deveined. Extra-large shrimp like colossal can be enjoyed as an appetizer or make a protein-packed meal served with a side of vegetables or rice. Remove the tails if desired before cooking.
It's worth noting that sustainable fishing practices play a crucial role in maintaining the populations of wild shrimp and ensuring their availability for future generations.
Health Benefits of Colossal Shrimp!
Wild shrimp, as opposed to farmed shrimp, can offer several benefits:
1. Natural Diet: Wild shrimp feed on their natural diet, which typically includes various marine organisms and algae. This results in a more diverse and nutrient-rich diet compared to farmed shrimp, which are often fed artificial diets. The natural diet of wild shrimp can contribute to their flavor and nutritional value.
2. Lower Environmental Impact: Wild shrimp are harvested from their natural habitats, such as oceans, seas, or rivers. Unlike shrimp farming, which can have negative environmental impacts such as habitat destruction, pollution, and the use of antibiotics or chemicals, wild shrimp harvesting has a comparatively lower environmental footprint.
3. Higher Nutritional Value: Wild shrimp generally have a higher nutritional content compared to farmed shrimp. They tend to be lower in fat and calories while being rich in lean protein, vitamins (such as vitamin B12), minerals (such as selenium and zinc), and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation.
4. No Antibiotics or Hormones: Wild shrimp are not subjected to the use of antibiotics, hormones, or other chemicals that are commonly used in shrimp farms to promote growth or prevent disease outbreaks. This makes wild shrimp a more natural and healthier option for those concerned about the potential risks associated with consuming such substances.
5. Flavor and Texture: Many seafood enthusiasts prefer the flavor and texture of wild shrimp over farmed shrimp. Wild shrimp often have a more robust, distinct taste and a firmer texture, which can enhance the overall dining experience.
